Seven Acclaimed Choral Ensembles...
WHS Mixed Chorus
The WHS Mixed Chorus is a choral music class open to students in grades 9-12 who are interested in learning about the fundamentals of singing and musicianship. Students will sing a variety of repertoire in accordance with the State and National standards of music that reflect variety of music styles, cultures, and historical periods. Students perform in two concerts- one concert in December and one concert in May.
WHS Treble Chorus
The WHS Treble Chorus is an auditioned treble chorus consisting of singers in grades 10-12. Singers will be introduced to advanced choral techniques, refining choral blend, musicianship, and vocal technique. Students in WHS Treble Chorus are responsible for performing in a minimum of two concerts during the year - one concert in the winter and one in the spring.
WHS Mens Chorus
The WHS Mens Chorus is an extra-curricular, non-auditioned mens chorus consisting of students who are enrolled in any WHS chorus, band, or orchestra. Students will sing a variety of mens chorus literature from traditional to popular. The WHS Mens Chorus will perform at the winter and spring concerts as well as choir recruitment events. Ensemble members will meet every other week in the evening from 6:30-7:45 PM. More after school rehearsals scheduled closer to the concerts.
WHS Concert Choir
The WHS Concert Choir is an advanced mixed choir consisting of selected students in grades 10-12. Students in this ensemble are introduced to advanced repertoire, performing various styles of world music, classical music, folk music, and more. Students perform at two WHS concerts in December and May as well as various community, school, festival, and outside-of-school events throughout the school year.
WHS Blue Devil Treble
The WHS Blue Devil Treble is an extra-curricular 9-10th grade a cappella treble ensemble that sings pop, contemporary, and collegiate a cappella style music. Rehearsals meet weekly in the evenings and the groups performs at various choral events such as the Winter and Spring Concerts, District Choral Night, and Folio.
WHS Chorale and WHS Choraleers
The WHS Chorale and Choraleers (Same students/different ensembles) will learn and perform a variety of repertoire ranging from Renaissance Madrigals, Carols, and Motets to Vocal Jazz and Contemporary A Cappella music. Students must be concurrently enrolled in Concert Choir. Students will be exposed to diverse and challenging repertoire. In addition to the WHS December and May concerts, students are responsible for singing at various outside of school events as well community and outreach performances. After school supplemental rehearsals will be scheduled throughout the year (TBA).
Mr. John Brzozowski, WHS Director of Choirs
Mr. Brzozowski holds a B.M. Music Education degree from James Madison University and a M.M Music Education degree from Boston University. The 2024-25 School year begins his 24th year in the NJ public schools. “Mr. B” has taught music to grade levels 3rd-12th grade. In 2017, Mr. B was the Westfield High School PTSO Teacher of the Year and was the 2023 Rising Star recipient for Outstanding Music Direction for his work on “Sunday in the Park with George” at Westfield High School.
Under Mr. Brzozowski’s tutelage, the choirs at Westfield High School have consistently garnered Superior ratings at local, state, and national choir festivals. His choirs have performed at Carnegie Hall, News 12 Sounds of the Season, 54 Below in NYC, as well as with the NJ Festival Orchestra. The WHS Choirs have performed on the international stage, singing in Austria and Italy, Scotland and England, Finland, the Baltics. In the Spring of 2024, WHS choir toured Barcelona, Valencia, and Toledo, Spain.
Mr. Brzozowski is a professional music director, conductor, and freelance collaborative keyboardist, performing throughout the tri-state area. In the summer he is a music director at Plays in the Park, in Edison NJ. He is a proud member of local AFM, 16-248. He lives in Cranford with his wife Annie, and two children, Jack and Emma Jean.
Mrs. Lara Rinaldi, WHS Blue Devil Treble Advisor
Mrs. Kristine Smith-Morasso, Collaborative Pianist
Mrs.Morasso is a retired music educator,having taught in the Westfield Public Schools for 37 years. She received her BM in Music Education and Piano Performance from Douglass College. Mrs.M spent most of her years in Westfield as the choral teacher at Edison Intermediate School where she directed The Broadway Singers as well as many musical theater productions. Her choral ensembles consistently received Superior ratings in festivals throughout the tri-state area.
Mrs.M performs as a vocalist as well as a pianist and is presently the collaborative pianist for the Westfield School District. She is a Westfield resident and is extremely proud to be associated with the renowned Westfield Choirs.
Mr. Brent Geyer, Mens Chorus Director
Mr. Geyer has been teaching general music and chorus in Westfield since 2007. He holds both a BM in Music Education and Piano Performance from West Chester University, a Masters in Music Education from the University of the Arts, and completed his Orff levels and masterclasses at Villanova.
Mr. Geyer has presented at various state music conferences, Orff chapters, and online workshops focusing both on the Orff-Schulwerk approach and music technology. His 5th grade choirs have sung with the NJ Festival Orchestra and were chosen twice to be aired on NJ 101.5 in which they won first prize for its Christmas Choir Contest. In 2024, his choir was invited to sing Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater at Carnegie Hall with the New England Symphonic Ensemble. Brent is an avid runner and is attempting a marathon in every state (half way there).
